Physical Appearance
Perlin's most striking feature is his ivory white skin and aqua colored eyes that seem to glow when he is using his arcane powers. This is merely a trick of the eye and a side effect of his spellcasting then an actual glow coming from him. His forehead plate is long enough to go halfway passed his skull and ends in two distinct pointed ends sticking out of his hair. From under this plate and around the pointed bone, gray colored hair flows down his neck. His gray hair often gives Azerothian races the idea that he must be quite old, but this is far from true. Perlin is young for his race, only a few centuries old. The rare features of his skin and the form his forehead plate were directly inherited from his father and instead of shaming himself for his rare looks, he is proud of them and reminds himself of his heroic father every single day.
Perlin's physique is, like most other uncorrupted Draenei, strong and tall. He stands well over Seven feet tall and his arms and legs show the strength needed to survive the hardships many Draenei had to live through well before coming to Azeroth. His walk is always slow, almost as if he thinks through every step ahead before taking it.
Perlin is almost never seen not wearing a robe, be it one that is fit for combat, prayer or personal life. His robes are part of what make him what he proudly is: An Arcanist. He is not a soldier or hunter and, out of respect for their pursuits, he choses to wear a robe at all times to make this known to all. During his efforts in saving Outlands he has gained the respect to wear the Robes of the Tempest as a sign of his efforts and achievements. In this robe he proudly wears a gem as remembrance to his deceased father on his chest. The shoulderpads glow a strong white light around his face and thus create the focus to his rare features.
Personality
The bloodline Perlin was born from is a noble breed of Draenei. Back on Argus his ancestors were part of the ruling elite. This still shows in his personality. He is a proud Draenei, proud of his race and their achievements as well as proud of his father for what he meant for the Draenei race. This sometimes comes out as a slight arrogance towards others, especially towards other races.
Though he respects the races of Draenor and Azeroth for their own strengths and flaws he is a Draenei purist to the bone. He believes his race to be the beacon of light and hope in the universe and feels that others that do not understand them are ill-informed and short sighted. This means that, although he is known to become close friends with people of other races, he will never truly see them as equals.
He is also often impatient when it comes to people that do not see his or his race's way in things. The Draenei, under the guidance of the Naaru, know what is best for all in his mind and those that do not want to understand this are short-sighted and deserve little respect in his eyes. He can be quick to anger when it comes to this as well, often deciding that action will show what his words do not. He is aware of this major character flaw and tries to fight it, but often fails.
Despite all this, he is generally a friendly person and is open to talk with anyone. He tries to learn from everyone around him and place their views into the context of his upbringing. Only when he cannot do this, he will close himself off and become impatient with that person.
His relatively young age still shows in the fact that he is often playful and mischeavous around those he trusts. Loving to joke with them or make someone the subject of a practical joke. Sometimes his anger and impatience towards a person makes him take the step to humiliate them with a joke to step away from the subject and to laugh it off.
All in all, he is a gentle person with a few mischeavous and sometimes even cruel strokes. He is quick to make friends but also quick to judge. And his arrogance is often used as a shield for his own uncertainty about what is happening around him.
Background
Right now, Perlin is officialy known as 'Arcanist Perlin, Hand of A'dal, Knight of the Ebon Flame, Defender of the Exodar' This title, next to being very long, is proudly displayed by Perlin because it shows the many deeds he has achieved in his time since his birth.
(editors note: the detailed background below is still subject to changes and tweaking)
Perlin
Perlin was born out of a long line of Draenei Mages, also known as Arcanists. He was the son of Perchryos the legendary Ice Mage and Myicra, the Arcanist who can bring her bloodline back to Kil'Jaeden himself. She was in a part of the family that decided to not follow him back on Argus. Their rare white skin and natural attunement to ice magic normally meant that his family started studying the arcane at a young age. Perlin, and his one year younger brother Perforad, rebelled against this. They did not wish to follow their father’s footsteps and wanted to find their own way. This happened just before the fall of Shattrath to the Orcish Horde.
His family was one of the few that fled with Velen. Even though his father would have gladly died with his brothers and sisters in Shattrath, he was demanded by Velen to accompany him. He would be needed to make sure the Arcanists of the Draenei would survive the battle.
During the battle, many warriors were lost. This is why many young men were asked to train to become the defenders of the surviving Draenei. Both Perlin and Perforad decided to enlist for this training, against the direct wishes of their father. Perforad truly enjoyed the armed guards, quickly becoming top of the new recruits. Perlin however, didn’t have a knack for physical strength like his brother had. He dropped out of training well before it was over.
Ashamed of this, but still too proud to go back to his father and follow the path of the mage, he found a job at the shrine of the Naaru. There, he helped to heal injured and sick brothers and sisters. Not having the holy or arcane powers of the Anchorites, he still helped all he could and was respected by his peers.
Perlin, Defender of the Exodar
Then, after Nobundo's return and the introduction of shamanism into the Draenei culture as well as the return of the Naaru to Outlands, a plan was made. Outlands was not the place the Draenei were supposed to be, according to Velen. Men and women were needed to travel to what is now known as the Netherstorm and seize the Exodar wing of the Naaru vessel Tempest Keep from the corrupted Blood Elves. Then, they would take this ship and travel to a new world to find the legendary Army of the Light the Draenei had been looking for, for centuries.
Perlin was to go there, together with his father and brother. In preperation for the attack, Perlin's father asked from Perlin that he would train himself into that which he has the most talent for, the Arcane arts. Perlin finally accepted and spend the days before the assault would happen studying with his father, quickly gaining a basic understanding of the magic of the arcane, fire and frost magic.
He would stay near his father at all times during the assault, and all seemed to go well. They managed to travel the Naaru O'ros to the Exodar and started to move away from Outlands with little to no casualties. But then, the sabotage of the Blood Elves became obvious.
Some Blood Elves had hidden away and sabotaged the Exodar's engine while in interdimensional flight. An explosion had ripped through that part of the ship, the part where Perlin and his father were. His father was mortally injured by the explosion and lay bleeding on the floor when Perlin spotted him. Rushing to his side, Perlin vowed to avenge his father's dead and make sure it was not in vain. Vowing to protect his people and free Draenor of opression. His father had smiled, his last words being a short prayer that asked the Naaru to bestow his wisdom and power on the young Perlin. This request was given for all that was possible at the time. Giving Perlin all the power over the element of Water and Ice that his father had known.
He used these powers to, while the ship was crashing, fight off the sabotaging Blood Elves nearly single handedly. Protecting the Draenei that fled to escape pods as best as he could, but forcing himself to miss each and every pod nearby. When the ship entered Azeroth and neared the hard earth, an explosion ripped through the Exodar again and blasted Perlin out of the ship. Flying through the sky, he thought his doom was near, only to be saved by his father's wishes who guided his skill to save himself by creating a block of ice around him to save him from the harm of impact.
Many of the survivors had witnessed Perlin's newfound powers and looked to him to aid them in returning to the Exodar, thinking him a gift from the Naaru. Perlin, unsure what to do but knowing his brothers and sisters needed him, tried his best to lead the survivors through this new and unknown world. They found the Exodar, crashed into a mountain, after a few days of travel, picking up more and more survivors on the way, healing them with their Naaru given powers as best they could before moving on.
Once they returned, Perlin was called before Velen who had heard of his exploits and actions during the Exodar incident. Velen thanked him for his selfless actions, stating this is an example all Draenei should live by in times of trouble. Velen had smiled at Perlin and gave him the new title: Defender of the Exodar.
Arcanist Perlin
Perlin and the other heroes of the Exodar were asked to aid in building a home around the crashsite, aiding in healing the land and making new alliances as well as fight off the Blood Elves that had followed them back. Perlin was still only using the powers of Frost he did not fully understand but he was studying hard to try to master them.
He travelled throughout the lands afterwards, aiding the new Alliance and learning more and more from mages he met during his travels. Humans and Gnomes had an interesting view on magical studies, though their studies seemed dangerous. Every new thing he learned, he also checked with his tutors in the Exodar and he became a scholar of all things Arcane, both Draenei and Azerothian.
Though, he still didn't truly feel like a mage. His powers were still mostly focused on the element of Frost and he had a hard time to focus his studies on the other powers of the Arcane. He came with this trouble before Velen, who had waited for him to be ready all this time. He learned the prayer to the Naaru his father had given for him was answered, but the events in the Exodar did not allow the Naaru to truly fulfill his father's wishes. This meant a part of his father's spirit was still travelling through the Twisting Nether and was unable to teach his son all that he needed to know. Perlin was to travel through the Dark Portal, to the wise Naaru A'dal in Shattrath. He would be able to link the spirit back to Perlin and allow him to gain all the wisdom his father had wished for him to have.
The trip was long and hard, Perlin was forced to fight many more creatures and aided the Alliance at Honor Hold to fight the Fel Orcs of Hellfire Peninsula before he travelled to Shattrath. There, he met A'dal. He had been preparing for the young Draenei's return to the city he was born in and showed him his father's spirit which had been called back from the Twisting Nether.
A'dal asked him a question: "Do you wish your father to aid you fully from now on in your struggles for the Draenei? So that you can use his knowledge to study the other arcane arts as well?" Perlin shaked his head and said: "No A'dal, I wish my father the rest he deserves. I can do this on my own power now and do not need his help anymore." A'dal respected this wish and his father's spirit moved on and beyond.
This meant for Perlin, that he was no longer completely focused in his mind by the pressence of his father's knowledge of the element of Frost. He had lost some of his powers, but felt a freedom in his mind and heart he did not feel before. Completely focused on his studies, he went to the Aldor of Shattrath and studied with the Anchorites, learning the spirit of the Light and the powers of the Arcane.
Perlin was finally truly a Mage, he was finally the Arcanist his father had always wanted him to be.
Perlin, Knight of the Ebon Flame
The months after, he grew fast in power and ranks. His superiors saw the spirit of his dead father in him and wondered if he was maybe guiding this young mage from beyond. Though Perlin knew that his father would always be in his heart but have eternal rest in the blessing of the Light.
His mettle was tested at many occasions and he has become a large asset for the Draenei’s fight against the Legion. Striking deep in their base of Hellfire Citadel, fighting the Naga in Zangarmash and foiling the Blood Elf plans in Tempest Keep. But, despite all his efforts, there was only so much Perlin could do by himself and with the few allies he had made during his travels. Even though the luitenants of Kael'Thas and Vashj as well as the leaders of Hellfire Citadel lay dead, he needed more allies to truly take down the evil leaders behind it all.
It was during his travels in Shadowmoon Valley, after first encountering Akama of the Ashtongue Deathsworm, that he heard about the Ebon Flame. The moment he heard about this group of warriors, fighting a Legacy in Outlands, he felt a pull to contact them. When consulting about this with Prophet Velen, he heard this was something felt by other Draenei before him. It was best described as 'the call of the Flame' and when he feels it, he should get into contact with them.
The search was long and took some effort to achieve, but one day he could contact Master Verannion, having heard he was in Nagrand. He took this chance and talked to the old Gnome. Even though Verannion was suspicious of the Draenei before him, wondering if this arcane wielding person was no Eredar. But Perlin was able to convince him of his true motives and was told to search out Thalos himself. The meeting with the Night Elf Commander of the Flame was short and effective. He gave him a direct link to the Flame and all other people that had answered the call.
Perlin was surprised to find how many other Draenei had gone before him and quickly tried to proove himself to his new allies. Fighting alongside them in the Caverns of Serpentshrine and the Eye of Tempest Keep. He was quickly accepted by all of them and, with the support of his mentor Oberron, gained the title of Knight of the Ebon Flame.
Perlin, Hand of A'dal
The time had come for Perlin to finally begin fulfilling the oath he had given before his dying father. He had to act against the major threat to the safety of his people, both in Outlands and on Azeroth, still being Illidan the Betrayer and his luitenants; Kael'Thas Sunstrider and Lady Vashj of the Naga. When he joined the Flame, they had already penetrated deep into the heart of the base of the Naga, only the Lady remained to be slain. Though Perlin wasn't with the group that actually slew the witch, he was pleased to hear the news during his training by Master Oberron. But the time soon came when Perlin could finally proove his worth.
The assaults on Tempest Keep had gone quite well, with only the Phoenix A'lar holding back the assaults of the Flame for any reasonable amount of time. But when the assault neared the throne room Kael'Thas had created for himself, the resistance grew heavier and heavier. The Flame needed to hold back their assaults and many started to feel tired from the constant battles. Also, their leader Thalos had left them suddenly to travel to Northrend while ill omens came from the Frozen North. Though for some it was another reason to fight even harder, for many others it was but another blow to an already broken spirit.
But Perlin was still fresh to the battles, as were other new recruits. This group included Perlin's old friend from Draenor whom he had just met again, Rémi. With the help of Perlin and these other new recruits, the Flame was finally able to slay the evil Blood Elf and claim the Tempest Keep free of Blood Elf corruption once again.
Upon returning from this quest, the heroes of the Flame, led by the Prophet Maelor, came before A'dal with proof of their actions. A'dal blessed all present and gave them the title of 'Hand of A'dal'. Perlin was filled with joy to gain this respect from the wise Naaru, finally feeling a hero of his race. But he knew much more battles had to be fought to truly save his people, Illidan still lived and Kael'Thas had sent a message that he was not truly dead yet.
And even above that, the ominous signs from the Frozen North kept streaming in and became more frequent. The spirits of the old Flames seemed to die, and the disappearance of the Prophet Maelor created a situation where the only leadership the Flame had came from the Gnome Commander Kinta who had, not long before, been able to share the leadership with Thalos and Maelor. Hard times had come to the Ebon Flame and Perlin could not stand by idly as his new allies went through this pain.
Arcanist Perlin, Hand of A'dal, Knight of the Ebon Flame, Defender of the Exodar
The Ebon Flame had entered a time of much pain and turmoil. Whispers all around talked about the Flame falling apart and becoming weaker, while the battles continued without Thalos and Maelor at their side. Still, plans were made to fight onward and continue the Legacy, even though the spirits of many of the Flames had become weakened. Perlin did not know what to do in this time. Not being linked with the Flame for so long meant he did not feel the same shifts in it's nature that the others felt. He tried to raise their spirits by his efforts and tried to be an example for his brothers and sisters in arms.
At that time, Dorgan appeared from the North. He had encountered Thalos and seen what he had become. Betrayal was on the lips of all and nobody truly knew what to do without the guidance of Maelor. But he was found again, a shell of his former glory, in Redridge Mountains. The Flames talked to him, told him about the plan Dorgan had created to free Thalos and what would be needed. Maelor himself was the key to victory, but he refused to come. Perlin had felt betrayed by Maelor. His friends needed him now more then ever and Maelor decided to abandon them!
Despite this choice, Kinta had planned an assault on the Black Temple. And so it came to be that the Flame assaulted Doomwalker, the minion of Kil'Jaeden, to get through the Temple's gate. And there they saw him, Maelor, trying to take on the monstrous machine by himself! Perlin and the other's rushed to his aid. The Flame barely survived the battle and knew they had to come up with a different plan.
With the aid of Maiev and Akama, they found a side entrance into the sewers of the Temple, and so the assault started.
Many weeks passed since that day, but the Legacy has finally ended! Maelor had rejoined the Flame, A past Thalos was aided during the battle of Mount Hyjal and rejoined with his blade and the Momento of Tyrande that Illidan still carried with him, his token of true love, has been taken from him to be used to free Thalos from the influence that has gripped over him.
Now, the preperations have started. With Outlands free and the Legacy ended, the Flame can focus on the next chapter of their story. And Perlin will be there, as he has been these months since he joined them. The Flame will move on, to Northrend!
