Keeper of the Ebon Flame
The Keeper of the Ebon Flame holds a special bond with the mythical gift of the goddess. This special bond allows the Keeper to commune with the ancient spirits of deceased members of the Order and only he has the power to perform the Ritual of Joining and bind the souls of newly recruited members to the ever-burning fires of the Ebon Flame.
However, such an intimate bond with Elune's gift does not come without a price: by allowing the Flame to merge with the soul of the Keeper, he essentially allows the Flame to harvest parts of the essence of his soul to keep itself alive. In ancient times, a new Keeper had to be ready to leave his immortality behind, for the sake of the greater good of Azeroth.
Becoming a Keeper of the Ebon Flame is considered the highest of privileges within the Order and only the wisest, most skilled and most dedicated are granted the title. When a Keeper feels his time has come, he undergoes the Ritual of Choosing where he prays to the goddess sometimes for months to guide his hand in choosing his successor. Once the successor has been chosen, he undergoes brutal mental and physical training to make sure he is ready for the merging of his soul with the Flame. Once he is ready he undergoes the Ritual of Unification where he becomes one with the Ebon Flame for the rest of his life.
Should a Keeper die prematurely in battle or otherwise, the Flame will seek out the nearest mortal to him and forcibly merge his spirits with its. Thus Elune ensured that as long as the warriors of the Flame are true to their oaths, the Flame will never die out.
Since a Keeper is the best and brightest the Order has to offer, traditionally they automatically becomes the highest general of the armies of the Flame.
In the Order's ten-thousand long history there have been eleven Keepers of the Ebon Flame in total. The chain broke with Thalos' betrayal, making him the last Keeper.
