Additional Notes

  • Abilities that mitigate healing (Aimed Shot, Mortal Strike, Wound Poison) are great to counter the healing component from Shear (Phases 1, 3, 5).
  • A positioning idea for phase 2: instead of simply spreading out, bunch up in 5 small groups, and spread out between groups. Will make chain heals and circle of healing more effective.
  • Since phase 2 is the hardest of the encounter, it makes sense to use cooldowns to bring the flames down more quickly.
  • Usable counters to Dark Barrage (P2) are Ice Block, Divine Shield and Cloak of Shadows. Possibly a lucky Nether Protection proc?
  • No ressing in P2. Ressed players may not receive protection against the Flames of Azzinoth, resulting in instant death and a wipe. Ressing at the beginning of P3 is fine.
  • Spreading out is key in P3-4-5. BigWigs proximity window is very useful here!
  • P4: shadow demons should be slowed in every way possible (Earthbind Totem, Frost Traps, Curse of Exhaustion and one warrior/rogue Hamstringing or using Crippling Poison.) MA should prioritize any shadow demon targeting the warlock tank.
  • AOE is potentially very useful for killing demons.
  • It is apparently not recommended to use the traps Maiev places in P5, because doing so often screws up positioning, risking a wipe.

Post-fight Notes

Positioning in P2
I'll assume tanks know their stuff by now. A good P2 depends mostly on them. Ranged, however, have to pay special attention to where they stand. It has to be inside the people who are marked. If you bunch up too loosely, you will take or cause (!) splash damage from/to another group.

Positioning in P3 (and P5)
Spreading out is very important. Make sure you have the BigWigs proximity window up, and use it to find a safe spot to stand. What is safe?

  • At least 5 yards away from everybody else, except if you're melee.
  • If you're in a crowded place and can't find a spot with zero people close to you, move so you are close to one person whom you think has more room to move. When Agonizing Flames hits, it's better to be very close to one person, than to be a little too close to 3 people.
  • At least 15 yards away from the parasite spawn points. They will be marked with flares.
  • If you get a parasite, move asap. Spawning parasites near the tank can quickly lead to a wipe.

Positioning in P4
What's safe in P3 is safe in P4, for the most part.

  • Again, 5 yards away from everybody else. Again, better to stand very close to one person than a little too close to 3.
  • The one difference is nobody, including melee, should get anywhere near Illidan or the warlock tank. Stay 20+ yards away from both.

Dealing with demons in P4
AOE capable casters must focus on timing their AOE spells so damage hits the very moment demons spawn. There is an accurate BigWigs timer. Use it to start casting your spell just before demons spawn.

Phase transitions
Phases change often. First it's 3-4-3-4-etc. From 30% and onward it's 5-4-5-4-etc. Two things are very important when going through a phase transition:

  • Threat resets, so DPS OFF and no huge healing spells during the reset. The actual point of threat reset happens near the beginning of the little animation Illidan goes through between phases.
  • Illidan must reach 30% at the beginning of a phase 3. This means all DPS OFF at 32% if it's during or close to phase 4. Then, when the next phase 3 begins, nuke as hard as you can (but remember threat resets), so we reach 30% before any parasites spawn.
