Basics
The Hunter is a Ranged, Physical DPS class - The only one at that. It is also a pet class, and perhaps the one that relies on its pet the most. From Level 10, Hunters will be able to tame most Beasts found in Azeroth, and these can then be turned into lethal killing machines. Thus, the important basics of the Hunter class are managing the pet, and making sure you don't run out of ammo. Beyond the very basics, threat management is a key component of the Hunter class. As the Hunter advances in levels, more and more threatbased elements are added. A max level Hunter features methods of taunting, transferring threat to other targets, instantly dropping all threat, and tanking - through the pet.
Shot Rotations
It is important to realise that in order to get the most DPS from your Hunter, you need to use a certain shot rotation. This is different with each spec, due to their abilities. Unlike TBC, where most Hunter specs used variants of the steady shot - auto shot - steady shot - auto shot, or 1:1 rotation, with the nerfs to Steady Shot we're looking at priority rotations. The basic priority list, and the one used by BM Hunters, is as follows:
Spec Information
All Hunter specs offer substantial DPS when played right. Theoretically, Survival currently offers the highest DPS, and Beast Mastery the lowest. However, this is in theory, assuming 100% uptime, and does not mean that a Survival spec is the most desirable, let alone the most suited to your playing style. Beast Mastery Hunters rely, as the name implies, more on their pets than any other Hunters - Up to the point that the pet is actually providing half the DPS. Thus, the tree is focused on enhancing the pet, and this is actually a really good spec for levelling and grinding, as it provides very limited downtime, if any.
The main difference between Marksmanship Hunters and Survival Hunters are in the additional shots learned through their talents, because they make for very different shot rotations. Marksmanship Hunters also gain substantial bonuses to their AoE abilities through talented improvements to both Volley and Multi-Shot, whereas Survival Hunters have access to talents that improve their traps and general survival ability. They also excel at burst damage.
